Proposed Extension

There are significant benefits to both Pennsylvania and New Jersey resulting from an interstate extension of the Broad Street Line.

Additional cross-river passenger transport capacity would be created, helping to relieve congestion on Delaware River Port Authority bridges.

In Pennsylvania, The City of Philadelphia would experience a reduction in Vehicle Miles Traveled (and associated detrimental impacts) for journeys to Center City, the Navy Yard, and other points accessible by transit.  Residents using SEPTA could gain access to a user-friendly transfer to NJ Transit services via the proposed Woodbury Transportation Center.  A travel time reduction to & from Rowan University or employers located in the southwestern NJ suburbs would result, making interstate travel to these locations by the use of mass transit much more attractive.

In NJ, residents of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties would gain access to Center City Philadelphia via a more direct route by eliminating the requirement to travel further northeast before turning west.  The Broad Street Line, as a fixed-guideway transit facility, provides an alternative to the traffic congestion experienced by NJ Transit bus service northeast of Woodbury.  A time-competitive transit option for access to the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia would be realized.  The proposed Woodbury Transportation Center would facilitate transfers between NJ Transit services, making intra-state travel more convenient.

Public transit travel times between Woodbury and Center City Philadelphia could be reduced by as much as 30 minutes.  Projected BSL travel time between Woodbury and Race/Vine station = 23 minutes.  Compare to the NJ Transit bus schedule shown below for travel times between Red Bank Avenue at Broad Street in Woodbury and Broad Street at Cherry Street in Philadelphia:

Add 11 minutes for travel to the intersection of Broad and Cherry Streets from Sixth and Race Streets in Philadelphia.
